CALL ME DEAR.
I have this friend, a good friend. I had saved her name in my phone contact using her full name; first name and surname.
The day she saw that, she screamed. Haba!!! She asked if things were so impersonal between us that I would save her contact with her full name.
I just laughed. Laughing is my standard response to almost everything, no matter how serious or trivial.
I knew what she was talking about, I could not have feigned ignorance. Actually, the day I saved that number, I had wanted to use something endearing. But I paused, I don’t know why. Maybe I was still struggling with myself to admit that I liked her that much.
Of course I edited her name on my phone and changed it to something she found satisfactory enough as appropriate.
This happened over five years ago. But everytime I remember this, I smile.
One of the most priceless things in this world is knowing how people feel about you and being right about it. Even rarer is finding someone who feels about you exactly the same way you feel about them. The feeling must not even necessarily be warm feelings. It’s a good thing to know those that hate you. And if you hate them too, my dear what could be more perfect?
My friend knew we were far more acquainted for me to save her contact with her full name. I knew too.
It’s funny how something as minor as a contact name can reliably reveal how you feel about people. Yea, people save names with Bae, My World, Honey and soft stuffs like that. But that’s for clear-cut romantic relationships. For less subtle relationships, name used to save contact says a lot.
I save your name with your full name, forget it, there is not air of romance around us. I save it with you last name preceded with Mr or Mrs, suffice to say,you don't mean the world to me. I save your name with Aunty this or Uncle that, I respect you and I subjugate myself under your “Auntyship” or “Uncleship”(you know I have good home training). I save your name with your first name only, without any affix of where we met or your line of work, emmmmm, I like you small or be sure I do not dislike you. If I save your name with a short form of your name, I like you, simple( lemme not throw the word love around). I swear, I have never saved anybody’s name with Maga this or Maga that. There is a number on my phone saved with “That Girl”, it’s needless saying how I feel about that person.
Up till today, there are still some people I feel hesitate about saving their contact “appropriately” because I fear to admit to myself how I feel about them.
You are on your own if you try to snatch my phone to see what I saved their phone contact with. This is my caveat. I swear, I will not be responsible if you see it and feel disappointed.
